Center For Family and Community Services

Mission:  

To empower children and families to overcome barriers to self-sufficiency.  

The current CFCS’ staff includes professionals with education and experience in social work, family studies, marriage and family therapy, psychology, business administration, and educational psychology.

History:

The Center for Family and Community Services, Inc. (CFCS) was established in 1987 by Lexington-Fayette County community leaders.  The initial purpose of the organization was to address concerns regarding reports of students’ low academic performances, adolescents’ drug use and sexually transmitted diseases.  Over the years the CFCS has evolved into an educational and social services agency that addresses the needs of
children and families who are educationally or economically disadvantaged.

Background:

In 2002, the CFCS established a Parent Information and Resource Center, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.  The overall program's purpose was to meet the unique training, information, and support needs of parents of low-income, minority, and limited -English proficient children. The program services were designed to enhance children’s readiness for school and support children in elementary and secondary schools to achieve academically. The targeted parents included parents of children from birth through age 5, and parents of children in elementary and secondary schools living in Lexington-Fayette County (population: 260,000) and Letcher County (population: 25,000).

For the past two years, the CFCS’ PIRC has received multiple requests for PIRC services from counties throughout Central Kentucky.

In the past five years, CFCS has received 21st Century Community Learning Center grants through the Kentucky Department of Education.  These grants have helped fund after-school programs in Fayette County at several elementary schools and Crawford Middle School.

In 2010 CFCS was awarded a High School Equivalency (HEP) Grant through the U.S. Department of Education to help seasonal and migrant agricultural workers receive their GED.
